Why Should I Bother?
That is a very good question, and to coin a phrase - "A good question deserves a good answer."
The simplest answer would be that "It is the Law, and you could be prosecuted and fined up to £500,000 if you don't comply!"
So why have so many other websites chosen not to bother?
Again, another very good question. For smaller websites, this is probably down to a lack of awareness, not fully understanding the legislation, concerns over the costs of implementation, or sheer apathy.
Many larger businesses took a "let's sit back and see what happens" approach. This was certainly the case when we first launched this website. However, over the past few months, the majority of these websites have now made steps towards compliance.
The bottom line...
The actual truth of the matter, in the ICO's own words*, is that financial
penalties for non-compliance will be 'unlikely'. The first course of
action for companies in 'serious breach' of the regulations will most
probably be the issue of an 'enforcement notice'.

Instead of looking at what would happen if you DON'T comply, why not consider what would happen if you DO comply? Customers (including potential customers) all appreciate honesty and transparency, especially when it comes to eCommerce websites. How many times have you been put off ordering from a website due to lack of contact information, delivery costs, or returns policies?
The simple truth is that the more transparent and honest you are with your customers, the more likely you are to convert and keep them!
Conforming to the Cookie Compliance regulations does not have to be a mammoth task. How much work is involved all depends on the size, complexity, and nature of your website, but even for the largest of eCommerce websites this can be achieved with relative ease.
